Rise of Marathas
here are some facts which caused rise of Marathas
mountainous terrain gave them security from invaders. Mountains made them hard worker, scarcity of rain etc. These difficulties developed self Reliance and bravery in them.
At the same time Bhakti movement inculcated spirit of oneness among the marathas. Devotion to God, equality of all believers before God these all things put together all marathas.
Guru Ramdas Samarth, who was a religious teachers at the Bhakti movement time played an important role in Maratha Rise. He was Guru of Maharaja Shivaji and had a great influence on him.
Childhood of Shivaji Maharaj
Shivaji was born on 20 Apr 1627. His father name was Shahji Bhonsle and his mother name was Jijabai. Shahji Bhonsle had a political appointment in Ahmednagar and Bijapur. His mother Jijabai was daughter of Jadhav Rao, a great Maratha Jagirdar. As politics was in his genes because both his parents belongs to politics.
Jijabai was a pious lady , she had a great influence on Shivaji’s character. She mould his character to a true Warrior. She used to tell him about cow brahmins and hindus. She used to tell him stories from Ramayan and Mahabharat.
Shivaji Maharaj And Konddev
Dadaji konddev was an administration assistant to Sahaji Bhonsle. Dadaji konddev also had a big role in shaping Shivaji’s ability as a warrior. He trained him horse riding, sword fighting etc. He imparted him administration skills. Guru Ramdas and Tukaram also have a great influence on Shivaji.

Shivaji Maharaj and Bijapur
Shivaji started his carrier at the age of 19. He took opportunity of prevailing confusion in Bijapur. He raided Fort of Torna in 1646, then Raigarh,Indapura. Slowly slowly he captured many forts of Bijapur. When Bijapur ruler came to know about his acts. he decided to take action against him. But the action against him was hushed up as Bijapur minister represented to Bijapur ruler that these capture of forts is for security of family Jagir.
Shivaji Maharaj- father’s Imprision
After that Shivaji directed his troops to a town in Kalyan region. Bijapur ruler came to action and he imprisoned his father Shahji Bhonsle. Seeing the life of his father in danger. Shivaji met with mughal Prince Murad and expressed his willing to serve Mughals. Bijapur ruler feared of collaboration of Shivaji and Mughals. So, Bijapur ruler freed Shahji Bhonsle. After that Shivaji did nothing for six years, as his father’s release was conditioned. He utilised this time to consolidate his power and administration.
In 1650 Singh Aurangzeb was Mughal governor of deccan. Bijapur ruler Adil Shah was passed away and new ruler was just 18 years old. Aurangzeb take full opportunity of this situation and conquered many forts of Bijapur. He conquered Bidar, Kalyani and Parandha. But soon Aurangzeb has to move to North for the conquest of the succession of Mughal Throne. So he made pact with Bijapur and gone to north.
Shivaji Maharaj & Afzal Khan
Now Bijapur was safe from Mughals, Bijapur government decided to take action against Shivaji. A large force was gathered , Afzal Khan was made commander of this force. He boastfully said about Shivaji “he will bring that mountain rat dead or alive”. As Afzal Khan went to mountains, he soon learned that it is not easy to capture shivaji in battle at mountains. He invited Shivaji to meet him and settle the matter. Shivaji agreed to meet him. Shivaji came to camp of Afzal Khan.
